When you tour Barrington, Illinois real estate, you may notice that many if not most of these homes have a septic tank, a well, or both.  Buyers from Chicago and elsewhere are sometimes concerned because they believe that septic tanks and wells require a lot of maintenance, but this is not the case at all.  Your real estate purchase should not be guided by utilities!

Septic tanks and wells may be different than the public utilities that you are used to dealing with, but other than some very simple occasional maintenance, they do not add any more work to your homeowner responsibility.  In fact, both wells and septic tanks can be serviced by a professional only once or twice a year

Septic Tanks
Septic tanks will require a bit of getting used to, but they are easy changes to make.  Generally, you just need to think before you flush.  Septic tanks are very efficient, but you have to be sure only to flush things that the tank can handle   This should be a rule of thumb with public sewage systems as well, but not everyone follows this rule.  There are several products you can buy at your local home store that you can use to treat the tank, but these are not required.  Depending on your septic set up, you may also need to have your tank emptied occasionally, but again this is a simple scheduled maintenance item.

Wells
Wells are different than your typical water source, but they work just the same.  Wells usually require little to no maintenance, depending on your set up.  You may enjoy well water more than the city water you are used to.  Well water may not be as hard, and is not treated with as many chemicals as city water generally is.  Many residents report an improvement in hair and skin when they begin bathing in well water.  As you can see, well water may actually have benefits!

When buying in Barrington, potential buyers should remember that septic tanks and wells should not be the overriding consideration when buying a house that you love.  Yes, they are different, but in very little time, and with little effort, you will get used to these changes, and may even grow to like them.   Barrington real estate is worth the change in your utilities, hands down.
