Barrington is often described as being the perfect distance from a big city.  This village is 35 miles northwest of Chicago, making it just far enough away from all of the traffic of the big city but not too far that you can’t go into the city if you need or want to.  Barrington consists of 72 square miles of very diverse lands that offer the opportunity to shop, dine, and enjoy the great outdoors.  Of the 72 square miles of land that is Barrington, 3.5% of that is water, making Barrington a great place to enjoy water sports, fishing, and swimming.

According to the 2000 census there are 3,767 households and 2,798 families in the village.  Barrington is a beautiful place to raise children, and with more than 39% of the households having children under the age of 18, it’s no secret that families are welcome here.  Married couples make up 64% of the households in Barrington, 25% are singles or non-families, and 9% of the households have someone 65 or older.

A large part of Barrington's growth after World War I was the result of relocating Chicago professionals who were looking for quiet suburban living close to the city of Chicago.  Those professionals, and the generations that followed them, have preserved the charm of the area.  While Barrington is a town that looks toward the future, residents here have not forgotten the rich legacy of the past, and both are combined to make a very pleasant place to live.
